Another downside is that the ins co decides which contractors to call, and they stupidly may hire inept people because they are cheap. A bad dishwasher required SEVEN visits (including no shows), which wasted our time. The ins co didn't "get" this was a problem until we told them that customers would refuse to renew after the first year if the service was so poor.
I agree with those who said it would be good if you could get the seller to pay for the first year so if anything catastrophic happened you may have coverage (as others said there are many exclusions).
When I purchased my Townhome, I got a 1 yr warranty, because I knew that most of the appliances were 15+ years and the Heat Pump looked over 20+ years.
The air handler started giving us fits after 3 months and we called the warranty people.
Service charges? BEFORE they even come out?!!!
After 2 visits, They "fixed" it.
Well, 11 months later, the air handler went out. Just 10 days to spare on the warranty.
They will replace the 28 yr old air handler, not the outside unit. They will send the CHEAPEST unit they can buy. Their guy will install.
How much is the "buyout" if I ask for money to replace and get a whole new unit, including outside? (Tax credits from IRS are available to homeowners if you buy energy efficient unit.)
$640!!!! That is their cost.
Warranty is $400 per year, and the maximum they will spend is 640!??
We did NOT renew the warranty.
Conculsion, Warranties are generally a rip off.
