You want an appraisal on your divorce or one on your house? An appraisal is an appraisal.

I don't think an appraisal for a divorce is any different from any other appraisal. If you have a friend who is a realtor they should know a few appraisers. Otherwise ask your attorney.

Well, I suppose a divorce attorney could apprise you of your rights in a divorce, but just get a good real estate appraiser if you need to determine the value of your house.

Better yet, you hire an appraiser and your wife hires an appraiser and you take the average of the two prices.

He wants an appraisal on his divorce. That's why he asked about it on a real estate forum.

We got three appraisals: Two of mine; one of hers. We used local real estate agents with appraisal services and unaffiliated independent appraisal services (just like a bank uses for a mortgage). I ended up buying her out at $5,000 higher than the highest appraisal just to shut her up and keep the process moving.

(She was convinced that I had bribed every appraiser in the entire state to scheme against her).

I mention it only to suggest that you do what you have to do in order to keep things moving. You don't have to be a push over, but in the end, it is more "emotional" than it is "economic", and you can spend thousands 'winning' the emotional battle.

As for "appraising" your divorce, for free I can tell you right now that if you 'work things out' amongst yourselves, you will be unhappy, but not devastated. If you let the lawyers and the courts get involved, you will be broke, very unhappy , and devastated.

When I enter into divorce proceedings in 1989 here in California, my ex wife and her lawyer hired an accountant to determine the present value of each of our retirement plans, our house, our cars, our savings, etc. My lawyer told me to cool down cause if we had initiated that action he would have used the same guy. This fellow specialized in this field and everybody used him. Bottom line, your divorce lawyer will know who to contact. Ask your divorced friends who they used. BTW, my second wife and I met at Parents Without Partners and dated for a couple of years before getting married 21 years ago.

I agree with Ted Bear. If you and your wife can agree and work out a settlement, a judge can rubber stamp it and it will be over. If you go fight in front of the judge, you both will not like the outcome.

Initially, my Ex wanted alimony, only a dollar a year for as long as child support was granted. My lawyer warned me that if that were granted she could go back years later and have that modified up to 70% of my income forever. I asked my wife why she needed that. She was worried about becoming disabled and not able to pay the house payment. I agreed to pay for a disability insurance policy to cover that in place of the alimony and we agreed on it. Win win situation.

Divorce is a miserable pit I would not wish on anyone. I feel sorry for you both.
