Don't worry. All you have to do is contact craigslist, and they'll take down the ad. Then keep an eye on craigslist to make sure it doesn't get reposted. Definitely do not contact the scammer. They are not in the US - probably in Nigeria.
This has been going on for years. First time we had it happen to a real estate listing in our office was 4 or 5 years ago. Had it happen on actual rental listings too (for less than going rate). You'd think word would have gotten around by now not to fall for these scams, and what the obvious warning signs are, but people must still be falling for it in droves or else the scammers wouldn't keep doing it.
There was a guy in Scottsdale, who used a fancy for sale house as his cover to sell his Lexus....three times on the same day. Got a nice deposit from all three, and bolted.
