I never understand why someone would want to buy a home, pay the taxes, take care of it and have others boss you around about it. Most HOA my friends bought into in CA were nightmares, big regrets and now filled with bossy HOA and undesirables. I would never ever buy in one.
If you don't want to live in a place that has restrictions, move. No one forces anyone to live there, we do it by choice. Just because they put the hot button in the mix about a returning soldier, that of course makes people upset, but rules are rules.
I live in a condo and people here do all kinds of things that get them cited, but again, no one is forcing you to live here. There are lots of places that do not have as many restrictions, just find one of those and you might be happier.
Me, I accept the rules and understand why they exist.
Even though the banner conforms to HOA regs, they ordered the banner removed
Why do people move into an HOA, and then complain about the rules? I don't get it. When you buy a condo, you own the inside, you don't own the outside. If you can't deal with that, then buy a nice stand alone home with a nice yard. No HOA to worry about. You life will be happier.
Don't buy into an HOA community then... people want the benefits, but don't want to abide by the covenants. The board is also culpable in this situation where they could apply some common sense, but 1 month is long enough for a sign.
If you really want some rules, move on a military base. Back before clothes dryers, I heard of bases where you were only allowed to use clothes lines on certain days. Person telling me about this was explaining why they did not want base housing even though it was cheaper. Too many rules.

In some areas you dont have much of a choice. Here in Jacksonville about 50% of the homes we looked at were HOA. The best deal we found just happened to be in an HOA, but with a very low fee. So we bought it and I ran for the board. I won a seat
Personally I like have restrictions/controls. I do not want the neighborhood becoming any less then what I bought into. I do not want Frank the junkman or Mary the hoarder living near me.
