So my first thought was he is part of a team and another member of the team got the offer and presented it to the seller without his knowledge. My second thought was that he has too many listings and doesn't have a good system in place to track what is going on with them.

I'm thinking your first thought.
I've seen it happen before.
Did you find the agent online? Some sites like zillow will list an agent that pays for placement next to the listing as if they are the listing agent. That's my guess but a team could also be correct. Call and ask how he didn't know and let us know. We all are curious.
I tried to get the story out of him when he called us back but no dice. This is a market where half of the listing agents won't even return my calls/emails; or they just attach a flyer and say, "We will review offers in three days." instead of answering my questions; and I was coming in as a potential buyer, not a noisy dude.
I may shoot him an email but don't hold your breath.
