What do people do when they can't afford to move out when their house sells until they get their money from closing? We plan to move several states away and need closing money for U-Haul truck, extended stay hotel or short rental house. We have no relatives or friends close by to help.

You could use credit cards... just be sure to pay them off when you get the money from the house sale.

Or, do you have any furniture, jewelry, musical instruments, or other items you could sell?

You ask to rent back the house for a week or so, so that you have the proceeds from the house to rent the u-haul, etc.

Ask to have the money wired to your account at the closing, which will forestall waiting for checks to clear. Otherwise, Silverfall's advice is excellent.

Good suggestions! Hate to sell my Roland keyboard but that might be the thing to do as I wouldn't want to put it in storage, especially non-climate controlled. Had considered the renting back situation from buyers for a short term--guess it depends on how soon they'd want to move in. Had not even thought of having the money wired to my account at closing--great idea.

If you're worried about the keyboard, wrap it in bubble wrap and put it in one of those smaller ZipLoc bags that you can vacuum the air out of. If you have a little package of dessicant from a pair of shoes or a recent electronic purchase, throw that in there, too. Suck the air out, and you have a pretty moisture-proof, protected item.

To save money moving use Craigslist and Freecycle for packing materials and boxes. Start packing and stow your packed goods in an organized way. Don't store piles of packing material - use it as you acquire it, potential buyers will see an organized seller.

We did the same thing almost a decade ago. We just had the money wired into our bank account, set the final move out date for a few days later to give us time to get all our stuff out and took off in the UHaul. Went super smoothly for us...hope your experience is the same!

That's what credit cards are for.

You can ask to retain possession for a week after closing, but not if you are already in escrow. Be aware that asking for retained possession of the house after closing will make some buyers back out, so it could make selling your house more difficult.

I have a Roland Fantom X8 which weighs about 70 lbs and is over 5 feet long and 18" wide. Won't fit in a vacuum bag, I had a crate built for mine.

I assume the OP's is similiar.
