Some of it has to do with hotel/motel tax, yes.

But also residents who invest a lot of money to live here in a residential neighborhood should not have to worry about the house next door becoming a de facto business that is rented out weekly.

Our local ordinance prohibits rentals under 3 months.

If you are renting a house for 4 months while your permanent home is being built, fine.

If you want to rent your upstairs rec room to Canadian tourists coming in town for the CMA Festival in June, that's not allowed.

I thought the poster was talking about a longer term tenant.

Some municipalities also limit how many unrelated people can occupy the same house. I think the original point in even bringing it up was that the OP needs to check his local zoning ordinances regarding renting a room in a SFH.

Or have his butler do it.

I am talking about someone renting out a room for an extended amount of time, lets say to a student or some other individual, not a daily or by the week rental. I wouldn't want a home turned into a "hotel" space either.

the good news you can do square footage and do a huge amount of writoffs.
the bad-- when you live alone there is never more than one crazy person in the house at a time.
