Yes. In some area's houses aren't built with basements or garages. I live in a subdivision where most people don't have a garage at all unless it was built after the house. VERY few houses in this area have basements. I chose my house based on the location, schools, and floor plan. I considered a garage a "be nice if" on the list of importance.

When you live near the coast, you cannot have a basement.

As far as garages go, many here are converted into bedrooms. Your taxes don't go up if you don't change the footprint of the home.

Only if I had a 20x20 room that I could use for nothing but storage and was located at a far corner of the home as to not impede on the flow of the other rooms.

It would not be my preference. A garage was a must when we were looking for a house. We have a one car garage and a crawl space. I would have liked a basement, too, but there wasn't a lot of inventory in our price range. If I still lived in Tornado Alley, a basement would have been a requirement. Where I live now, while possible, tornadoes are not very common.

It drives me crazy when people convert garages to bedrooms. Why??? We get crazy weather where I live. My point of view is that if I'm taking on that much debt, I want to be able to park my car in a garage.

I just bought a house with a two car garage after not having one for 8 years prior. The garage is our most favorite place in the new house and I will never attempt to live without one again.

Ok. By a coast or near water it's acceptable. Would you live on slab further inland away from beaches?

Slab vs basement depends on what part of the country you are in.

Florida = Slab
Maine = Basement
