I want to buy a house but have a range of 300k from the lowest to highest that I can afford. If I tell real estates this, will they only show me homes in the upper part of my range? I really want to see everything, at least at first, to get an idea. Should I perhaps not mention the upper limit at all?
If I were a Realtor and you told me you wanted to see everything within a $300K (or even wider) range, I would quickly refer you to my most serious competitor ... and let you 'kick their tires' - while I spent my time with people who had a better idea of what they wanted and were seriously ready to buy something.

I was driving around some out of towers a few weeks back, and they thought I was driving a company car, and was getting a salary + commission. This was my first encounter with anyone that I said anything like that. I'm sure others have thought that, but they did not ask.
As for the OP, it would depend on the agent. Most of us prefer repeat business, and we will not get much of that if every buyer we work with thinks we tried to push them towards only the most expensive houses.

I don't think the OP's post was ridiculous. We are still looking for a retirement home or property on which to build, and our TOTAL price including land and/or any needed remodeling is $550K. So, we would be "wide open" from between $100K (land only) to $550K in which our perfect home in perfect condition on the perfect property that is already be in existence. An "in between" would be a home of about $250K-$300k in which some serious remodeling and repairs would be needed. (We are looking to eventually have a single story home of about 1,800 square feet, so we are not being unrealistic.)
Thoughts from realtors on the above would be appreciated!

Depends on where you are looking. 250K - 300K would be more then enough to buy a brand new home you would like in some areas, in other areas it might not even buy the land the house sits on. You need to speak with a local Realtor.
It's just based on availability of homes that have my must-haves in the area I'm looking at. Theoretically my lower range would be $0 or better! :P
Share your "Must Haves" with your agent, and you should not have a problem.
A good agent will want bragging rights for helping you get your "Must Haves" at the best possible price. When you have a productive relationship, the money takes care of itself.
Our agent asked us what the top of our budget was and took us to look at any house we asked to see. Your agent should take you to see any house you are qualified to purchase and want to see. We saw houses from 350K-550K and bought one for about 450K.
Price range is but one factor in determining the type of house you're interested in. I have plenty of clients with a budget that exceeds the value of the homes in the areas they're looking, but I would ask them lots of questions about other "must haves" and "dealbreakers" so I could narrow down the search a bit. NO ONE - including you - has the time, energy or patience to see every house on the market. If I was your broker, and you truly didn't know what types of features and properties can be found throughout your price range, I would take you to a handful of listings in one day that represented a cross section. Then we would sit down and talk about what you liked and didn't like, and I'd narrow it down from there.
