Apologies in advance if this has been discussed to death already, but I found nothing on a forum search.

I am going to have a new house built since I am finding very little that appeals to me in the available inventory. Does anyone know of a good way to source builders or find out where there are developed lots available? I am looking in the general Salem area. My affordable area is Willsonville to South Salem, west as far as the Willamette river and east as far as the foothills of the Cascades.

I don't know any custom builders in that area, but the Oregon Contractor's Licensing Board is online and you can look up contractors to make sure they are licensed and what complaints have been filed against them.

For a developed lot, you go to a good real estate agent and look for in-fill lots.

Somewhere in Salem will be a blueprint printing office. Try asking them for a list of their customers that build custom homes of whatever level you are planning on.
