Hello,
I just read a long passionate thread about mcmansions and how awful they are? Im almost embarressed to admit that I actually like them. I find they have all kinds of bells and whistles I want, sq footage, beautiful master baths etc etc that I am looking for in nice neighbourhoods.

So please let me hear from people who bought and like living in them!! and please elucidate WHY...thanks so much!

I always wondered why they're called "McMansions." Does it have something to do with the Irish??? Lol.

I assume people like them for the same reasons you do. It just seems that the people on this board prefer more unique, older and charming homes.

Most that belittle them cannot afford them. Same with ZIP Code envy.

Exactly what IS a "McMansion"?
HMMM...
Perhaps I live in one!
3 bedrooms and a den (could be fourth bedroom), 1 3/4 bath, single level, 2 car garage, large deck, on 1 2/3 acres, with combination 2 stall shop, hay barn, and 2 horse stalls.
Could that be considered a "McMansion"?
You can call it what you will, we call it "home"!
I like it because there is no HOA, very few CCRs (and nobody to enforce them), and it is 5 miles outside the City Limits! I can keep my RV at home, I can overhaul a vehicle in the driveway, and nobody will ever tell me I can not install any radio antenna I can afford (I have a Ham license!)

Not me!

The people I know who like McMansions were either raised in lower-class families or are immigrants (mostly Indians).

YMMV.

My understanding of McMansions are that they're relatively big houses, but are built out of few differing floorplans, meaning your house ends up looking like every other house in the block. They tend to be relatively poorly constructed, since they're put up in a hurry, and they have tiny yards.

I can't stand them.

to me mcmansions might be cookie cutter ( they all look the same) but to me atleast, they look v pretty. They are in nice neighbourhoods with good schools and yes they cut out all trees and have small back yards as they take up a lot of space for the house itself. they have almost as many bathrooms as bedrooms and extras like game rooms, bonus room etc....they can also be very energy efficient and smart homes. built 2000 onwards...

so...whats NOT to like?! people who live in them and are happy, please stand up for yourself! thanks

Those are some of the reasons I don't like them. The built 2000 onwards isn't a specific problem, it just tends to indicate poor craftsmanship, as during the housing boom you had houses flying up left and right as fast as possible. A lot of these houses are now having some big problems because of the pace of construction at the time, and the low-bidder approach to hiring subcontractors.

if i may ask, why does all looking the same ( as long as they look nice), pose to be a problem?
