Brandon, it must be touchy for an agent, but I think it's a fair question for a buyer to ask. Whatever my background is, if I were new to an area, I'd like my agent to steer me to a neighborhood that I am comfortable in.
Why should asking about racial or ethnic make up be any different from asking where do the other people who work at the college live?

Because there is an unfortunate history in the USA of doing horrible things to ethnic groups for fun and profit.
If personal ethos is not sufficient to rein in terrible behavior, often laws get passed.
In this topic, personal ethos has historically been so insufficient, multiple Fair Housing Laws were deemed necessary to curb behavior.

We work in real estate. That is the dirt, and any improvements. We don't sell people.

Everyone,

I got more info on this guy that wanted my broker to not sell to any blacks. He was the former sheriff of some nearby small town and ended up with dementia in his old age which may be why he said what he said. Who knows?

I'm in about as deep as the South as South gets. I'm in Columbia, SC where Sherman marched through burning buildings and not too far from where the "War of Northern Aggression" started. Honestly, in 11 years and lots of clients, I've only had race come up handful of times. That I recall, I only had 1 seller that was concerned about who he may or may not sell to and I chose not to work with him. I've had a handful of buyers that asked about race in the areas. Interestingly enough, half of those were white families that wanted a diverse area to raise their kids in. I tell people when they ask that I can't discuss race. If someone is just a racist jerk, I don't work with them. It's just not something I've had come up very often.

This is the type of post that brings out the vocal minority so I'd thought I'd speak up for the silent majority.
Thank you for speaking for the silent majority. No, this was not a troll thread. It is true.
