Our condo community has a railroad right next to it. In fact, across from my condo, About 100 feet away are the tracks. Now there is a big hill, lined with pine trees and other various brush and stuff to kind of screen it out. You can't even see the train unless you go upstairs and look out the window.
Doesn't bother us at all. We are in a whistle-free zone, so that is nice. Considering how close it is, it really isn't as loud as we thought it might be. Most of the time, we don't even notice it.
I lived once in an apartment adjacent to tracks. The first night I was surprised how loud it was. After a few nights, the brain just tuned it out and I never heard it again.
My husbands grandparents have a train track actually running through their property (their driveway crosses the tracks... the house is from the 1800s so I'm not sure which was there first).
It's about 30-40 yards from the house and you can definitely hear the train from inside, but it isn't terrible. Also, there only seem to be 1 or 2 trains a day.
Honestly, I think I'd prefer having a train tracks behind my house (assuming it isn't a busy line) than super close neighbors.
ETA: I think the house construction and level of sound proofing also factors into how much of a nuisance it is. I used to know a guy whose house was literally right next to a train track (way closer than my husbands grandparents) and the entire house rattled *every.single.hour* as it was a very busy line used by both Amtrak and Freight. It was horrendous!
Well, if there's a siding there's a main line somewhere fairly close.
And, as I mentioned in my first post, a low volume siding like that can be used for several different things by the railroad, many of which are noisy. My favorite would be to store the engines on a cold night when you have to keeping them running. That's both noisy and smelly.
You took the words out of my mouth. They can have a train sit for hours, add cars, which makes a racket!
I lived in an apartment right next to the train tracks for a year. I didn't mind it a bit, but most friends who came to visit were freaked out by the noise. If you haven't ever lived by the tracks, you might be surprised at how much the noise upsets you.
But honestly, the noise didn't bother me for some reason.
