These charts and articles don't paint a true picture. There are many state with cheap property taxes, however, they have other taxes and fees such as personal property taxes - yup you pay hundreds or thousands on you car, boat, atv, golf cart, etc every single year. There's also sales tax on things like groceries which high property taxed states don't tend to do.
One thing we noticed when living in a low property tax state was the schools.....they're HORRIBLE! Yup the state we lived in was 49th for schools that year.....49 out of 50. YIKES! The problem we discovered was the adults went through those horrible schools and were very under educated. It's a cycle sadly.
Look at New Hampshire, there's no income tax, but they have high property taxes. So it looks like you're taxed out the wahzoo. It also depends on the town and county what your true property tax bill is. The averages don't mean anything. Most of us don't live in a mansion or on a lake or on the ocean....taxes for those properties are high everywhere.
doesn't sound like there's a single STATE that imposes a property tax. just locales - be they county or city/town.

Michigan also imposes a property tax for education. It's imposed by the state but collected through the local tax bills.
Our property taxes in Alabama are pretty low, but we do have a tax on groceries. I suspect if they ever abolish the grocery tax that property taxes will go up.
I don’t see how the average middle class person can afford to own a home in a state like NJ or CT, I can’t imagine paying over $5k per year in property taxes. That’s just crazy!
I've known folks who lived in NJ. The general sentiment is, people are jealous hearing others "only pay $10K per year for property taxes!". While they do have houses that are cheaper, along with their property taxes, those tend to be in bad neighborhoods, or with lousy school systems.
almost 4k a year for a 2400 sq feet house doesn't seem low to me.
What I mean is, most people I know, at least in Columbus, pay a lot more than that. I do, and I’m in a 1700 sq ft condo. Columbus has very high property taxes, no matter where in the county you live.
