Our property taxes in Alabama are pretty low, but we do have a tax on groceries. I suspect if they ever abolish the grocery tax that property taxes will go up.
I don’t see how the average middle class person can afford to own a home in a state like NJ or CT, I can’t imagine paying over $5k per year in property taxes. That’s just crazy!

It really is crazy. I wasn't surprised that NJ was the highest. My father has a small, older 3/1 and when the values dropped after the housing crash it was worth only $100K or less and he was still paying $6000 a year which is $500 a month.
His neighbor built a 3 story home with 3 units. on the first floor is a 1 bedroom apartment and the garages, then on the second and third floor are 3/2 apartments. He got a break for building them with the city and has to only pay $5K a year for 5 years I think and then his taxes will go up to $14,000 a year, but he actually just sold after being there for less than 2 years. So most of the rent for one of the units will go towards just paying the property taxes, they better hope they don't get a deadbeat.
Property taxes can and do vary a great deal from county to county within a state so for the most part, this list isn't very helpful.
That's in general but in NJ every county is urban and taxes are high everywhere.
Where I live in Southwest Florida the town I live in has lower taxes than the city next door because we don't have a police department besides the county sheriff which has an office right in town, I don't even think we have a towb hall but the city next to us has a huge 3 story city hall building

I know. Try paying almost 21,000 for three houses. It's insane.
One thing most people don't know about CT is that we do not have any county level Govt. This essentially creates a "home rule" situation in each town/city and they have to provide services for themselves. It gets expensive when you have to fund your own schools, police, fire, EMT, and road maintenance, among many other services.
The state of CT does have an elaborate formula for sending money/funding to each town/city which helps offset costs, although that funding is typically 10% or less of a towns budget.
Some rural towns do share schools and some rural towns pay the state police for service instead of funding their own police.
I believe RI is the only other state that does not have any county Govt.
