Leaving one's animals to a person one doesn't even know is a high-risk move. Lots of crazy "nice" people in the world. For all the OP knows, the new owner is an animal abuser. At the very least, the OP needs to require that the new owner provide a vet reference. They owe their animals at least that much care, before they leave them behind to an unknown fate. Cats aren't furniture.
OP, I hope you're not giving much thought to this brand of nonsense. You're doing the right thing with your beloved cat(s) by providing them with a stable environment that you know they love. You already know taking them with you would be highly stressful and possibly devastating to them (which may be the only alternative to leaving them with someone you don't know as not everyone has a ready cat-adopter at hand). So this kind of talk may as well be gibberish.
We bought a house once where a dog lived.
Sellers moved to the other side of town.
The dog refused to move and kept coming back .
After coming to get her for the 5th time they finally let her have her way and she became part of our family.

I'm with you ! The best shelters usually check out references with the family's vet, and make a home visit to be sure it is a clean home and that the people are not animal hoarders. Lots of sickos around.
thanks.
I am concerned about the cats being happy, but I'm not put off by paranoids on the internet.
Paranoids? Do you have ANY idea how many animals are abused on a daily basis in this country? Do you know that Craigslist is PLAGUED by people looking for "free" or "low fee" animals for the express purpose of doing them harm?
Easier to call people "paranoid" than do the right thing by your animals. You've convinced yourself all will be well because you're too lazy to ensure that it will be well. Animals aren't plants or furniture. Your attitude is ignorant and appalling.

When I bought my present house in 2015, I arranged to be the first showing and I put in a full price cash offer that afternoon, as fast as my agent could make it official.
The house wasn't even on the MLS yet. I had seen the agent putting the sign up after dark the night before and had the showing arranged an hour later. I haven't ever had any regrets, either! It was a fair price and I got the house of my dreams.
There always people with Cash for Homes signs everywhere.
