Your wife and kids on board with an undeveloped island 4000 miles away from them and even further from your hideaway in Singapore?

She's the one that called this thought crazy.

Hence I came here for a 2nd opinion.

I find C-D to be one of the most rational discussion boards if not the most rational discussion board on the internet. And people are eager to share too. So I like to come here to get views.

My projects are grinding forward slowly. Remote control has its limitations; I do what I can.

This project is actually an evolution of my lake property project. I dawned on me -- why not get an island property with a lake? Can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Yes an undeveloped island 4000 miles away has its disadvantages, but I'd be getting AN ISLAND! My preliminary hunch is advantages outweigh disadvantages.

Of course, the cheap ones definitely have some real big drawbacks; for example some are in Canada where it is very cold. But islands can be as cheap as 100-200K USD.

I have a little spare money. I already have a few houses, I don't need another house. I am seriously considering buying something in the 300K range, just for the joy of owning such an unique property. I may go visit it once or twice a year. Is this a crazy move?

I figure, in the worst case scenario, I won't be able to sell it and will get stuck with it forever. That doesn't bother me one bit. Seems like a pretty safe investment to me.

What do you think?
Go for it.

If there is a seaport anywhere near, you will be able to hire someone to deliver supplies and run you back and forth.

How calm is the ocean? My Son has a 23 foot aluminum fishing boat that is suitable to go 60 miles out into the Pacific after halibut on days when the ocean is in a good mood. If there are not a lot of big storms, you could get a boat like that and leave it in a secure boat storage yard in the area. You keep insurance on a boat like that.

My son paid about $60,000 for his, but a less fancy similar new boat can be had for about $30,000. They don't go down much as they are used, so might as well buy new and get brand new motors.

It's my understanding that those aluminum fishing boats are a west coast thing and not available anywhere else but on the west coast, but it is a trailerable boat, so easy to get one moved.
