With a local extra tax option, VT has a 7% sales tax in most of the state....the whole border with NH looks like East Berlin as far as shopping goes since NH has zero sales tax. VT is a very unfriendly state tax wise. Convoluted income & property taxes do not help.

HAHA I was thinking the exact same thing when I read this. First off, moving from Portland, OR to Vermont would probably cost me $20,000 at least, I can't actually imagine it being that low. I mean I'm budgeting about that for a move to Las Vegas, so who knows if it took a couple of semi trucks to get my stuff over there?! How is $10,000 going to help me? I'm still going to be out money and in a pretty lame state. I've visited Vermont before (friend whose family lives there) and while it was pretty, I went in the dead of winter and thought, wow, this place sucks. I'd never want to live anywhere like this.

PS: As was mentioned, their taxes are horrible, so no thanks to that.
