Starting in 2019, Vermont will pay people who move there and work remotely for an out-of-state employer $10,000 over two years to cover relocation expenses, coworking memberships, computers, internet, and other work-related expenses. Gov. Phil Scott signed the bill into law on Wednesday.
My remote workers require a minimum level of support services where they are based. As such, many places may not have the reliable phone service needed or internet speeds required for them to properly do their job. However, the idea is sound from a government viewpoint. The in state spending for both personal and business needs probably will exceed the outlay especially if it brings in more than one income earner in that household.
Beautiful state. I've cycled throughout the entire state north to south & east to west, but what they would give you....10k, they will take right back in high taxes.
Tempting - my husband and I are both remote so wonder if we would both get $10k. I LOVE VT, have lived there before and could definitely live there again. There are plenty of areas in VT with solid internet access and cellphone coverage. I mentioned this to my husband, but now that we’ve moved to a warm weather state and he’s had a taste of comfortable winters he doesn’t want to go back. Plus we’re now in a low-tax state (NV) so as the previous poster noted, that $10k or $20k would disappear quickly with taxes. We’re pretty happy in NV, but if another year passes and house prices continue to surge in NV (per my posts in the bubble thread) I might give VT some serious thought - thanks for sharing.
I need access to a good airport for occasional travel, though. The BVT airport is fairly small and expensive to fly in and out of.
EDIT: Now that I actually read the article, VT has only allotted for 100 people starting January 1 - those 100 slots might go quickly to workers in Boston’s tech corridor that can be remote.

Article says 100 slots for the first 3 years!! (although the wording is vague so I guess it could have meant 100 each of the first 3 years) However I read the bill and to me it actually looks like only 25 per year for the first three years. So no, not a huge gamechanger or anything.
Interesting idea . But they’ve only budgeted for 100 grants over 3 years ?
Wonder how many people they will get to move there . Guess it would be nice if you were planning to move there anyways and can work remotely .

Vermont has budgeted grants for about 100 new remote workers in the first three years of the program and about 20 additional workers per year for every year after. But if you really want to make sure that life in the Green Mountain State is for you, schedule a visit in the winter first.
