We have a little over 5 acres. Most of it we keep wild for animal habitat, with very little cleared areas. No lawn, no mowing. The garden area is fenced to keep deer out. There are many outbuildings, and they have required new roofing once in 20+ years, no other problems with them, but I wish they had metal roofing. Not a lot of upkeep is required of us here, just regular weeding of the small cleared areas and normal garden work.

I grew up 45 acres. Some of it was woods, some was a field that was planted and cared for, some was orchard, some was barnyard, chicken coops, etc. If you want animals, that requires daily care and upkeep.

It just depends on how you intend to use your land.

I love this thread! My SO and I are hoping for acreage in our future. We've walked 60 acres and liked it - nice buffer in case things get built up around you. We almost bought 4 as a stop gap last year - it had another wooded parcel that wrapped around it and empty lots on either side so it looked much bigger than it was, but if those got developed all bets were off.

Anyway, I tell people 50+ acres and they think we're nuts. I mean, I'm not planning on mowing the whole thing! I expect woods buildings etc.
