For those who keep asking about my personal preferences:

"Personal preferences aside (assuming one is looking more for return on money than a home for oneself), what/where would this be?"

Start in Santa Monica/Venice California and move south until you hit your budget.

The best?

The kind that makes you a lot of money while at the same time giving you minimal headaches...

BTW, Has anyone has any experience in financing and managing an overseas vacation property?(I ask as I obviously ignore my own statement above)

What and where should it be for best return?

I didn't think this question was that hard...

This was not your question in the original post.

My original post didn't give personal preferences because...

"Personal preferences aside (assuming one is looking more for return on money than a home for oneself), what/where would this be?"

Wherever property values are going to rise a great deal in the next few years. How do you find out where those places are? Research, research, research.

That would be another desirable attribute, for sure; how does one go about researching that?

You still are avoiding the important question that anyone with experience enough to answer the question, needs to know before they can help you.

Question----How much Cash do you have to invest as a down payment on the property. Loans are going to require 25% or so as a down payment on investment property. The amount you can invest as a down payment plus closing costs, is a very important determining factor on what you can buy and hold as a rental.

seems that a CA beach place would be the obvious choice then, assuming their insurance costs are much less than a desirable east coast area. Check out 31339 PCH in Malibu. Compared to some others, 8 acres plus several livable structures at 2.4MM seems cheap.
