Its a pain in the ass to get info - i send in a request-- i get a text "Can we call in 10 min?" the call is from someone who knows nothing about the property but can have someone get back you. I've been through this where I never did receive any info.

Its best to find the listing agent directly- Never respond to those .

Best to avoid Zillow.
They are not there for your benefit.

That's not the fault of Zillow.
It's the fault of the agent with whom you made the inquiry.

The only reason for Z to exist is to feed the OP and other folks to those agents.
Consumers do not pay Z.
Agents pay Z. In return, they expect the opportunity to drip like a toddler's nose on consumers.

absolutely. Agent isn't responding to the leads generated by Z. OP needs to contact another RE if he/she is that interested.

Best to have your own agent, who has your best interest at heart. They will find out any information you need, and you'll never get robo''d-anything again.

If you haven't found one that has your best interest at heart, keep looking. They're out there. And if you're of the ilk who believes there is no such thing as a Realtor/agent who's looking out for you, then keep doing it the way you always have, but please don't complain about this unsavory aspect of it.

What would be a better alternative?

I made the mistake of trying to find an agent through Zillow many months ago. I sent an inquiry to one agent asking for some information and explained I was looking but hadn’t decided on an agent.

I received a call from a mortgage broker who said they got my info from the agent and wanted to start the loan process. I explained that I wasn’t about to start any process and they seemed a little agitated and embarrassed.

I called the agent and wasn’t so pleasant with them about giving my contact info to a third party without my permission. I also explained that I would never do business with an agent that was so unprofessional. They tried to blame it on Zillow.

Zillow? Never again.

Agents are people. Talk to people. Someone knows an agent who can help you.

Zillow is really just an ad platform for agents, funded by agents, to prey on people who don't grasp that fact.
No more, no less.

Robo sales calls are simply a low cost-of-sales 'numbers' game for the companies that use them. They are willing to annoy 200 people at home in order to find one who is willing to listen to their pitch. I would not even remotely consider a realtor or RE marketing approach that relied on robo-calls to find new clients.
