Yes, I know, I should consult a lawyer. However, I would like to get your experience in buying real estate/condo/house outside the U.S. For instance, I heard that if you buy beach front property in Mexico that you cannot own it. However you can on land away from the beach. What about buying in France? What about buying in other countries? Can you really own this property, or can the government take it away at their whim? Also are there any books or websites that can concisely tell me about the laws/regulations? TIA
I've bought and sold many properties in the Bahamas over the years and still own one. The Bahamian government changed the way they tax foreign owners this year and it will prove disastrous for some. Your investment in another country is always at risk of changing laws (taxes, land use, occupancy, etc.).
Also, make sure you know the costs to sell a property before you buy. Selling costs can be way higher than what you'd pay to sell a similar property in the US.
Make sure it's a stable country, if you buy in a banana republic and the government is overthrown they may now own your property.
