We are going to change agents, but we’re OK with the firm. Should we ask the outgoing agent to refer us to another agent, or start from scratch on our own?

Background if needed: We were referred to an agent in a large firm in a large metro market. She’s fine, but her local office is urban south and her knowledge base is there. We’re going to buy in a north suburb, about 40 miles from her office (and home). Of course she says she’d like to still represent us, but she only has general knowledge of the area/neighborhoods we’re interested in, and we want an agent with in depth local knowledge and contacts.

If it matters, the ‘outgoing’ agent hasn’t invested much time in us. One brief meeting and she set up an MLS portal, though that hasn’t been very useful. We’re finding more on realtor.com and Zillow than her portal shows.

Sure... yes, ask her for a referral. It's reasonable to want a local, and 40 miles is a long ways if you will likely make repeated trips to look at places.

The referral is the best option for her. Hopefully she'll do some research... interview and find a good agent for you up in the area you're going!




BTW, if her portal isn't showing you "everything" you're seeing elsewhere... consider that the criteria you gave her is perhaps different or more restrictive than the one you use browsing on Zillow or Realtor. She has many more search tools and criteria available to filter the results by than you have on those public sites. Sometimes more is good, if your criteria are not set in stone... sometimes more is NOT good, if the extras you're getting don't really fit the criteria you want, or they aren't even accurate or currently available for sale, as often happens with Zillow.
