I'm generally interested in this phenomenon. It's something I have noticed disappearing.

Is it just me, or are more home owners requesting two or three car garages?

My favorite garage design was always the old single stretched doors that folded up, because you had access to the center of the garage not blocked by a central beam. More room than a two car garage, and some of them you could fit two cars in with no issues.

It's something I don't see a lot of around here in New England, except on a few very old homes. Do you notice what I'm talking about too?

I've noticed the new builds in my semi-custom development are mostly two doors as well. Ours was built in 2010, when most were a single door. I would've preferred two doors at the time we were looking... but not anymore. Love the 18' opening and only one garage door opener to go bad.

That's a New England thing. In the rest of the country the wide door is common. I do see sometimes the two doors on new McMansion style builds, but that's usually because they've put a step in the roofline over the garage and so the front surfaces differ by a foot or so.

I tried to get my parents to get two doors for their brand new home from NVR. There is a multitude of benefits. It was not an option.

I have a wide 2 car garage door on my build that was completed in late 2018 here in Los Angeles County.

I think it's just your area.

Our NC home that we had built in 2013 had a single-door 2+ car garage as did most of the homes in the neighborhood - even ones that were still under construction when we moved in Jan of this year. Some homes in the neighborhood had individual doors for each bay, but the majority did not.

I agree.. the big doors are cheaper, but they also need a lot more maintenence, as do their openers, and there is no redundancy.

Living in an area prone to heavy hail storms, I liked the 2 car single door.

I was able to squeeze our 3 cars into it when needed. Parked the 2 sedans tight on each side, then the SUV in the middle, and crawled out the back of SUV.

A design idea around here is the 2 car garage with either a large door or two single doors, and a secondary, 1 car garage. One of the garages will face the street the other will face the neighbors home. So if you drive into your driveway, one will be in front of you, and the other to the side. I love that style.

Single door, two car garages are not uncommon in our neighborhood. They’re a bit more expensive (4 tracks instead of two, two drive motors and controls instead of one). Ours is two single doors. We have both types in our neighborhood, both types on our court in fact.
