After reading the insuring empty houses thread, I was wondering if casitas and carriage houses and guest houses are considered empty from an insurance point of view and get charged a surcharge? They are furnished, but not used all of the time. They are separate from the main house, but not by 100s of miles.

Many thanks!

PS: I'm getting the word "casita" from HGTV, so I'm not sure about the spelling.

We have a casita...yes you spelled it correctly..I think that is the term for guest house in the southwest here. Ours is used for guests, but it's insured with the house and included in the square footage...

Thank you so much! Every so often, I see casitas on HGTV's "National Open House," "What You Get for the Money," and "My House is Worth What?" They are as cute as a bug's ear!

Sometimes they are called servant's quarters - I have one behind my house and I think I may retire to it and rent out the front.
