There are many in the atlanta area that offer discount slabs.Online go to stonelocaters.com, if you get them ask for Erica. As to style. There is a pendulum swinging. If you buy a house, or are renovating one. Do what is practical and never for the buyer. The buyer usually will always make changes, but they will need to live with what you have for a while. A practical kitchen will never go out of style. Mine, I have a tile countertop because I didn't want to totally rebuild for granite, nor do I like granite. I love concrete, I love soapstone. Good design is functional, efficient and pleasing to the eye. I think in the end going with what is in by some standards is really boring. I had a project in one neighborhood where they demolished older starter homes and replaced with mcmansions. It was horrible, a street with all brown houses costing in the millions. yet a blog over we see clapboards, brick, stone, etc and the neighborhood is appealing and lovely. The older neighborhood still has people waiting for buyers in this climate, yet the new ones well let just say, some are going to auction.

I vote leave the Corian.

If you feel truly compelled to do something you can offer a "counter upgrade" allowance, so fussy buyers can pick whatever the heck they want.

Seems like a lot of buyers don't care as much as everyone says they do, though, reading through these posts.

Recyclyed glass counter tops are a sure bet for the future. They look as nice as granite, minus the radon exposure of rock materials. It is what I would use now instead of granite/quartz ect.

They are very pretty-take a look-

www.icestone.biz - IceStone - Green Countertops made out of recycled glass

It's worth a serious look, for anyone planning to rip out counters in the next few years. In my opinion, this is the truly newer material that will stand the test of time, and help with resale value in the future, as "going green" and low to no VOC consciousness grows.
I think you're right about going green... Have any of you seen the articles like this one:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/24/garden/24granite.html

Not sure how believable this is, but who knows if its another reason to not buy granite.

Thanks for the links. I'm going to check out Ice stone. I definately like the idea of using recycled materials.

And clean for cooking! We have granite for the first time and the fact that you can't tell by looking when it's clean makes it seem inherently non-functional for a kitchen.

(Yes, I clean the kitchen. Kid and husband, not so reliable. Add in hurried mornings and a lack of caffeine and being able to see whether a counter is clean is kinda useful.)

Sounds functional to me! If you can't tell if it's clean, who else can?

BTW, the way I can tell with mine is I lean in close, the over to the side, and squint. Having some good natural light helps, too.
