The way I read the OP was that the people LIVING in the home were renters. They paid money to someone who claimed to be the owner. The fact he claimed to be the owner is validated by the quit claim deed he filed, and which was later rejected. These renters, according to the OP, took care of the house, and did nothing to damage it. They were victims as much as the op was. Should they have done some research to be sure the guy they paid was actually the owner? Maybe, but I ask, how many renters ever do that? These people appear to be nice enough normal people who did nothing wrong. The criminal is now sitting in jail where he belongs.
I agree with this. I completely understand that the OP freaked out when she saw people living there but I could not help but feel for the renters who probably answered an ad in a newspaper, paid their deposit, moved in and then all of a sudden there were very angry people coming to their door and bringing the police. I would have been pretty scared. It seems to me that they were caught in the middle of a very bad situation.

In any case, I'm glad the OP got it worked out.

I agree, I'm glad it worked out for the OP but as a renter myself I cannot imagine the horror of having the cops turn up on the doorstep telling me my 'landlord' in fact had no right to rent the property to me. Especially since I have two kids, one of them in school. And on the flipside I can't imagine the nightmare of being about to close on a new home only to find people living there and claiming they had a right to.
