so im hosting a dinner party for 4 guests; all in their 80's so nothing too rich/buttery nor too spicy. But I'm also hosting this dinner with my own family; two small boys (5 year and near 3 year old) so im stumped what to serve that is comforting, appetizing yet interesting enough to be outside of my normal dinner rotation?
i have rest of this week to food shop and plan. It'll even be better if i can make some of the dishes ahead of time the night before or morning of dinner party.
I have several recipes where the meat servings are cooked on top of a pilaf, casserole style that are attractive and can be done ahead of time. Better yet the dish serves as the table centerpiece and everyone can serve themselves family-style at the table with little fuss.
The base can be pasta or rice. Meats are thick cut pork chops or chicken.
I know a lot of older people like meat loaves or meat balls, mashed potatoes. Those are comfort foods that are easy for them to cut, chew and swallow.
Mandarin or Cantonese style Asian dishes and rice are good, too, as everything is already bite-sized.
I think Old-Fashioned Chicken Fricassee Recipe | MyRecipes would be great as well as a meatloaf with herbs, garlic mashed potatoes and a steamed vegetable or two of your choice. How about a roasted chicken with potatoes and a vegetable? What is also very tasty is a ham and noodle casserole http://kitchenproject.com/german/rec...chinkennudeln/ with an Iceberg salad and a sauce of yogurt, lemon juice, sugar and dill .
I would go for something old fashioned and mild tasting, which should be agreeable to both older folks and children.
Something like Chicken a la King on pattie shells or biscuits. A nice green salad and a yummy dessert, like a big chocolate cake.
As Alm said, roast chicken or turkey, mashed potatoes and a veg, is always a safe choice.
A perfectly roasted chicken with real gravy, mashed potatoes and a steamed, fresh vegetable.
Quote from Julia Child: "You can always judge the quality of a cook or a restaurant by roast chicken ... We never seem to tire of chicken in our house, even though I have fed my husband upon it for weeks, even months at a time … I can go on eating chicken forever."

Most of my suggestions might be too rich and buttery. it would help if we knew what they liked and what they cannot have because of dietary restrictions.

I hope you tell us what you made, and how it went.

Excellent - a properly roasted chicken is wonderful, but I would have to cook buttered English peas to accompany the mashed potatoes and pan gravy.
