Hi!

I am doing baked potatoes in the crockpot. All recipe sites say to poke them and wrap in foil and put in the cp. Can I lay a couple of bone-in chicken breasts on top or will they end up tasting like foil?

I don't know the answer but will be interested to see what others say. Sounds like an easy meal.
It seems like you would need some kind of liquid for the chicken?

I think the chicken will create liquid. It has the skin on it. Well, I am going ahead with it...I will let you know! LOL!

I've never put anything on the potatoes, just washed them and stuffed as many as would fit into the crock pot and turned it on low before I went to work in the morning. By the time I got home in the evening, they'd be done perfectly. If I were going to put any kind of meat on top, I'd be very sure it was well sealed in foil so it didn't drip on the potatoes.

Oh, I never poked them either, only if they are going into a real oven or a microwave. Makes a terrific mess if they explode!

It turned out very good! I did poke them. I don't know that it matters in a crockpot. But, I have had them blow up in the oven, even when I did poke them.

I don't think you can do baked potatoes in a crock pot. The most important thing about a baked potato is that it is baked. The skin is dry and crisp and wonderful to eat. The flesh of the potato is brown near the skin and has a distinct roasted flavor. You can probably make mashed potatoes in a crock pot.

Yeah, I'm thinking the texture would be an entirely different style of potato in a crockpot. Not bad, just different than that of a true baked potato. Even microwaved baked potatoes come out differently than those baked in an oven.

Actually, they turned out very good. I would do it again. I even cut up some the next day and fried them up for breakfast. (our oven is on the blink right now, I was craving a baked potato, so it worked out well) I don't like them in the microwave at all. Some recipes don't use the foil, they just oil 'em up and pop them in the crockpot.

Its a cooked potato but not a baked potato. I don't even like them baked in foil. I wet them down a little and sprinkle some fine sea salt on them and put them in a real hot oven for about 15 minutes and then turn it down.

Now you got me thinking. I think I'll try a couple potatoes and some really juicy cut of beef ribeye, all in the crockpot. Yes, directly on the potatoes. I don't know cooking times right offhand, but I'd imagine at least 4-5 hours or more on low heat would cook everything thoroughly. Or just add some shredded cheese, some milk and salt and let that sit for a while.

What does work:
Wrap up the potato in foil. Toss it in the crockpot on low heat for 10 hours, or 6 hours on high heat. Don't add anything, and no need to poke holes. Yes, it will be fully cooked throughout. Trust me. In my opinion, cooking them so slowly actually makes them taste better than oven-baked potatoes.
