And thanks everyone for all the suggestions. I use the recipe in my 1980's era Betty Crocker cookbook, but I think it's the same as on the pumpkin can. I will definitely add nutmeg though next time i make one, that sounds like a great idea. And...have I been buying evaporated milk for nothing all these years? Plain milk works too?

I started using fresh pumpkin this year. I've been playing with different recipes. My family favors pumpkin pie spice over individual spices. I just look at the total amount of spices called for, and substitute that amount of pumpkin pie spice. There is something in the pre-mixed combination of spices that my family says makes it "zingier".
