Poke some holes in the bread with a fork.

There's only one bread I know.. that didn't do a very good job of soaking up the egg. Sunbeam bread. It has a very dense crumb.. not hard......spongy...made good toast for kids and grannies...but not so great french toast.

Heck.. I don't know if it's even made anymore...I buy bread at the bakery, not the grocery store.
