I know what you mean about prices increasing!
I am a bread vendor's wife and with each gas price increase the bread companies and stores increase product cost as well. It is a transportation issue. When the trucks have to pay more, we bear the brunt. It is harder to sell when the company keeps jacking the price up, yet we have to pay our bills too!
Along the same lines of frugality and not quite a recipe I have invested in several indoor plants that provide fresh tomatoes and strawberries and even herbs. I have a sunny area to put them in and they thrive well for me. The more we can grow for ourselves the less we have to buy, right?
What's more... if bread prices keep going up I may end up investing in a bread machine for our own familie's bread supply!

I wanted to start a thread for good, thrifty recipes. dont know about y'all, but its just a crying shame when milk is more than a gallon of gas! I will be posting my own faves as soon as I sift through my recipes, but in the meantime, I thought I would get the ball rolling! Please post!
Milk has cost more than a gallon of gas for as long as I can remember. But anyway, one of my favorite cheap, easy, healthy meals is good old beans and rice.

2 cans of black beans
1 can of diced tomatoes
1 large yellow onion coarsely chopped
1 green bell pepper coarsely chopped
1 jalepeno pepper finely chopped
Several bulbs of garlic coarsely chopped

Saute onion, bell pepper and garlic in a little olive oil. Add jalepenos once onions start to become translucent. A couple minutes later dump in tomatoes and beans, turn down heat and allow to simmer for 15-20 minutes.

Serve over brown rice, add a dollop of sour cream and some sharp white cheddar cheese. Serve with Louisiana hot sauce on table and good beer.

Stuffed cabbage. Cabbage is cheap. Buy ground beef in bulk and canned tomatoes. They're very filling too.

Anybody ever try Joe's Special?

It's a San Francisco dish from the 20's. My Dad is from SF and my mom would make it for us all of the time. Very inexpensive & gets the kids (and grown-ups) to eat their spinach!
