Made an impromptu chili for dinner with cornbread. I had the chili simmering while making cornbread. I had about 1/2 cup of buttermilk leftover and on a whim dumped if into the chili. Let it simmer an hour.

Just tasted it now and wow! It's was tangy and brought out the chipotle flavor well. Think I will keep adding that splash of buttermilk when making chili.

And for the record. It's the good thick buttermilk. None of that nasty thin stuff in stores.

A lot of folks add sour cream to their chili. I suppose buttermilk isn't that much of a stretch.

That's what I was thinking. I sometimes put a dallop of crème fraiche on my serving and thought well why not. It's nuts but oh well. lol Luckily it worked out!

Cream yes many many time. Buttermilk, never thought of it. However I don't believe the effect is the same.

Dairy and chili pair well, IMO. Sour cream, cheese additions, chili cheese dips, etc. I don't think other dairy would be a stretch.

I use buttermilk or sour cream in a lot of the same recipes. Just can't drink the sour cream.

Good Bulgarian buttermilk certainly has it's place on my table. On the other hand, we have laws, rules and standards in some areas of Texas, prohibiting the Corruption of Chili!!!! I love chipotle but it doesn't belong in Chili! Save your chipotle for hummus You can certainly make it however you please, to suit your taste, but please call it "Mom2-3's Chipotle Chili" or something that identifies it clearly to Texicans. The average Texan doesn't know better and has been known to eat New Mexican Green Chile. This is just wrong on so many levels. It's called "a bowl of red" not "a bowl of green"!

Just because someone tells you to do sometime doesn't mean you should! Here's proof!

Mom2-3, that's tantamount to pleading “Yes, your Honor I shot em' but I didn't kill em'.

Ma'am, ...beggin' yer pardon, ... we Texicans don't allow no whims and dumping in the kitchen. It is the Art of Chili Con Carne. Beans, pintos, on the side is allowed but it's a slippery slope. Sooner or later we'll read on C-D that someone (among the great unwashed) dumped a can of Boston Baked Beans in their chili on a whim (it brought out the sweetness), beggin' yer pardon, Ma'am. . .Chili ain't sweet.

Jes' saying,

Rust
