I know there are a gazillion ways to make pumpkin pie. Shoney's, I think has the best. Until I had their pumpkin pie, I would always pass when someone offered it to me and I certainly never ordered it anywhere. I've made some passing pies, but not like Shoney's Anyone have any idea how they make theirs?

Meanwhile, here is a recipe for a light pie with no baking (but can't hold a candle to Shoney's):
1 can pumpkin pie filling
1 pkg cream cheese
1 tub whipped topping
dash or nutmeg
2 ready-made pie crusts

Spread cream cheese on 2 pie crusts
mix the whipped topping with the pumpkin pie filling.
Pour half in each pie crust
garnish with nutmeg
refrigerate for two hours before serving

The picture of the single serving was taiken at Shoney's

Despite much Googling, the only Shoney's pie recipes that came up were for their strawberry pie, and they looked like approximations rather than the genuine article.

For Thanksgiving, I made a pumpkin pie from the actual pumpkin and it was really, really good, and not all that difficult.
You just have to make sure you use a pie pumpkin, not a jack o lantern pumpkin. The thing I remember most besides the good taste was how *orange* the pie was.
I used this recipe.

I did the google thing, too and couldn't come up with it. I think Shoney's probably buys the pies from another source. I tried looking for recipes by Sysco (caters to a variety of restaurants), too. Nada.

I do like the site your referenced for the scratch recipe. I might have to try that, too.

I love it!! In our area, it is only available right before Thanksgiving. I buy six boxes, to make sure I'm covered for the year! I can buy a graham cracker pie crust for $1, and the pudding cost .59. Can't go wrong on the taste or the cost!

Default Denser Pumpkin Pie?

It's almost pumpkin pie time and I'm looking for a single crust recipe that someone has had success with. This might sound weird, but I'm looking for a pie that is a little on the "denser" side; almost like some bean pies I have had - but not a pumpkin flavored cheesecake. I don't need to restrict gluten, sugar, eggs, calories, or anything. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you tried reducing the amount of milk you add?

Thanks! I used evaporated milk - maybe condensed instead? I really didn't think about changing the recipe I already had (that would make too much sense!)
