Yep, it's that time of year...
  • Buy a half-gallon of whole dills
  • Pour the brine from the jar into a bowl
  • Dissolve 1 packet of Cherry Kool-Aid and 1 cup of sugar in the brine
  • Cut the dills in half, lengthwise, and return them to the jar
  • Fill the jar with the neon-red brine
  • Place jar in the fridge
  • After one week, eat your koolickles during the hot summer days
What??? You've never heard of these Mississippi treats?

Then, there's that other Mississippi delicacy, the Delta Tamale, but that's another topic.

Never ever heard of them. But something that kooky needs to be made. I'm so on this next time I shop.

Wait can I use kosher instead?

I wish somebody would make them and give me one -- cause 1/2 gallon is a TON of pickles when you're the only one that eats them!

I'll admit to loving pickles and liking cherry kool-aid once in a blue moon, but I'm not so sure about this!

My batch is in the fridge. Half a gallon of pickles is only around $4, so not much money is wasted if they aren't appreciated. You can always use the Kosher pickle spears. Wally has those in the 64oz (half gallon) size ($4).

Hey, just think of the reactions when you bring out the koolickles at your next party and/or July 4th.

4th of July...hmmmm...genius! We always bring something for the cookout. This will solidify my family's opinion of me!!

I first heard about Koolickles from Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt where he rode his motorcycle to different places looking for new and different foods. I've never tried them, but I've made the pickles that use sour pickles, tobasco, sugar, and the same basic process. They come out like a hot/sweet/sour pickle, and I love them. I bet the Koolickles are good. I'd sure try one.
