My mom always makes homemade pumpkin bread at Thanksgiving. This year she used Krusteaz pumpkin bread mix and added nuts. I thought it was fabulous. Their banana bread is also good.

I've never done this, but my husband reports that he has made many a cake in a Dutch oven over a fire on Boy Scout campouts using this method. When I read your combination of spice cake, root beer, and cream cheese frosting to him, he erupted in an enthusiastic, "Yum!"

I'm going to make this this weekend. Just a 9x13 inch sheet with canned icing. Nothing fancy for the prototype. If it's as good as your DH and I think it is, my next one will be layered with homemade icing. I love layered cakes. Getting excited about it. Thanks for the encouragement.

Ruby Ann Boxcar says her husband, Dew, always asks for a Dr. pepper cake for his birthday:

1 box yellow cake mix
1 box instant vanilla pudding
4 eggs
3/4 cup of oil
1 can Dr. Pepper, WITH REAL SUGAR
3/4 cups chopped walnuts

Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 1 hour. Glaze the cooled cake with 1 cup powdered sugar and enough Dr. Pepper to give it the right consistency.

Had a health scare last weekend so cake was not on the agenda. Nothing some exercise and more fluid intake won't fix. When I get to it, and I will, I'll be back!

The boxed cake and soda idea definitely "works" but the result is noticeably less quality than the real thing. It will work in a pinch, but if you have the normal ingredients on hand, there is really no reason to do the soda version.

But it's more about the convenience and the flavor combinations.

Though i have never tried it, I am hearing more all the time about soda water in baking.

Spice cake and Dr. Pepper would be really good, too.
