Someone I know is making a long-distance move & didn’t want to pack her pantry items. She asked if I wanted her canned goods & I said, free food, of course. She left a boxful on my porch, but there are 2 cans of sweet potatoes in syrup. I’m not a fan of the candied sweet potato/mini-marshmallow thing. Does anyone have ideas for “disguising” the taste & texture? I don’t waste food, but don’t want to schlep 2 small cans over to the food pantry. Plus, I like a challenge. BTW, I like fresh sweet potatoes, spouse hates them in all forms. Thanks for any ideas.

If it were me, I’d check the freshness date and if it is OK. I’d donate. Someone will love to have those sweet potatoes. But if they are too sweet, you can’t change that.

But I think you could bake them in a pie, as in a pumpkin pie. At least the oversweetened flavor would be appropriate. Sweet potato pie is a Southern dish.

Pie would be good, I did a sweet potato lemon pie once, it was tasty, I think I found it on google, it was a sunny Anderson recipe. You could also add some to a curry, ( if you eat curry).

Found the recipe, I think I used sweet potato instead of squash. It looked like a pumpkin pie, but the lemon flavor was nice. I wouldn;t add too much sugar to it, if you are using the canned sweet potatoes, maybe none, taste the batter before you add egg, & see how it is.

I only use canned sweet potatoes, except when I bake fresh ones. Unless you just don’t like sweet potatoes at all, just drain off the syrup and bake them with butter, a bit of brown sugar, and salt...no marshmallows necessary.

I would do a sweet potato pie. I like it so much better than pumpkin pie!

I should have added...I don’t like sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie, both the flavor & the texture...could they be incorporated into some kind of soup or casserole that is on the savory side?

Maybe you could drain them, mash them, and use in a "pumpkin" bread recipe.

Unless the label says “candied yams”, they won’t be too sweet. I buy Bruce’s yams often.

That’s an interesting idea. The potatoes will already have sugar or corn syrup in them. You might have to adjust the recipe.
