Have you eaten Uni (sea urchin gonads)? We first tried it after finding live urchins at our local Restaurant Depot. The cleaning was messy and kind of disgusting, but the actual Uni wasn't bad and we've had it a couple times.

I realize uni is the current fave of the self-appointed foodie poobahs, but we found it horribly salty and fishy. Along the lines of caviar, IMO. Maybe our taste buds are too pedestrian

Was it fresh from live urchins or some of the prepackaged stuff. When someone applies the word "fishy", I always think it wasn't fresh. Many folks that eat sea scallops have "wet" packed, once they try "dry" packed they can certainly tell the difference.

Fresh, both times. Once in Spain and once in Italy, both at high-end seafood places.

Uni has been mentioned in dozens and dozens of various threads (grossest foods, etc.).

It is disgusting with an off putting iodine aftertaste.

No, I am not even slightly tempted. It makes me wonder how starving and desperate some poor wretched people were even to think of trying to eat sea urchins.

I so want to try the urchins from your side of the country! We can only get them from the north Atlantic.

I love a good sea urchin. And I'm not a self appointed foodie anything. I eat it because it tastes fishy, which is what fish is supposed to taste like, which is the reason why I eat fish to begin with.
Some people eat cow's testicles. I don't wonder whether they are secretly questioning their manhood and by ingesting the bull's, they'll increase their own.

To each their own. Don't judge what others eat, cause you sure as hell eat something weird to someone else.
