Chop a bunch of apples, any kind you like -- a mixture of varieties is best
Chop a couple of nice, ripe pears as well
Pour over just enough apple cider to cover and simmer until it turns into applesauce.
Cinnamon stick, nutmeg or apple-pie spice optional. No sugar needed.
Uses:
Side dish for meat, especially pork, or for vegetarian haggis
Use in place of gravy
Added to rice dishes, stuffing or oatmeal
Poured cold over pancakes or waffles
Poured hot over ice cream
Filling (with walnuts, cranberries and more spices) for winter squash
Add a cup to your favorite meatloaf recipe to give it a uniquely smooth texture and a hint of sweetness
Or, best of all, warm it in the slow cooker with a few of those carved-apple "shrunken heads."
Personal childhood favorite:
Serve chilled in a bowl, with 2 maraschino cherries to serve as eyeballs
