Do you use one as the basis for your chili? If so, which one?
I was a loyal Durkee Original Chili Mix fan, until it stopped being readily available. I even won 3rd place in a chili cook off. Then I switched to McCormick.
I know I could concoct my own spices, but I like the consistency of a mix. I just ordered some Durkee online, and I’m eager to see if I still like it the best. I hope they haven’t changed it.
I use French's Chili-O mix. It is s the only prepackaged spice mix I use. I know I can make my own, but it's what my mother used and just reminds me of childhood/home/etc. I do add extra spices.
I like Wick Fowler's Two-Alarm. Like BoSox 15 said about the Shelby mix, it's a good starter that I like to tweak with a good grind of black pepper, a shake of red pepper, and a little ground dried jalapeno if I have it.
I didn't have much time on Sunday, so I used regular ground beef, but usually I'll just get a big piece of chuck, and shred it by hand. With a really sharp knife, it's not difficult, just takes some time that I didn't have right then.
Years ago, I used Williams chili seasoning, which I used to buy in packets.
I now use one of Penzey’s mixes. There original medium hot is very good. But if I cook for people who don’t like hot food , I like to use their Chili 6000. Sometimes I do my own mix of chili pepoer and cumin and oregano. I make chili pretty much with whatever is in the pantry, and however the mood strikes.
Nope. I use 2 tablespoons chili power, 1 tsp paprika and one teaspoon salt. Prepackaged stuff is just chemicals.
