OMG I was sooooooo disgusted yesterday,,,,,, so WE ( Michigan) have a shortage of Apples due too the late and hard frost,,,,, so they up'd the Price on Apples soooooooo bad so I went to the Farm Market yesterday and being prices are super high NOONE is buying them so they let the APPLES lay in the crates going soft BUT not budging of their Price !

I did not find ONE apple that was crisp,,,,,, when I asked if they would cut me a deal on some for like canning kind they said no apples are just more this year. I told them I know that but your Apples are old and mushy already why not make a deal on some,,,,,, I got NO response.

But thats how it is here in this area, rather let it sit and waste away then cut a deal !!!!!! I am mad !

You did fantastic.....and my DH thought I had a lot, lol.

Try the applesauce bars....they are really good

I hope you get some apples.

try this:
Where in Missouri to find pick your own farms and orchards for fruit, vegetables, pumpkins and canning & freezing instructions!

BTW, some Lowe's stores have 50% off on their canning jars and supplies. Check yours before they run out. Mone isn't offering it. I have to go down the mountain about an hour away
Thanks for the tip: We are about 15 or 20 minutes away...I will probably not get there til Friday, so who knows if anything will be left..?? I am dedicating the rest of this week for deep cleaning, fall instead of spring. I think I forgot to clean in the spring.. Today is clean the 3 bathrooms. First I had a church board meeting, now I am home and you can see how hard I am working....

If it's really worth it to you...call your store and buy what you want. They can hold them

Sorry about that. I have seen that happen many times.

I would also be mad. What a waste.

Yes indeed I miss my farm but it was time since my DD will be graduating in May. I hate seeing food prices so high knowing I will have to buy foods I normally can.

I hear ya some of that goes on in the state below you as well. Those $38 bushel of apples I told you about a the flea market they wouldn't budge on their prices either. They were loading up most of their bushels at the end of the day unsold. Makes no sense.

Lisa call or go online to Lowes then have them dropped shipped to your nearest store you won't pay S&H that way.

OMG...that IS disgusting, Jasmin! I'm so glad we have such intelligent and caring folks who have our local fruitstand. Seriously, they do NOT want their produce going to waste, so they carefully cull the produce and will give you a great deal on the stuff that's past its prime.

Today I picked up 12 lbs of fresh cranberries....still haven't decided what I'm going to do with them. This is just round #1 for them...and they'll probably get sliced, portioned and put in the freezer for breads & muffins through the year.

Ylisa... Yes, we get tuna out here. We used to fish for it ourselves, but now we rely upon friends & family (son) to bring it in. I trade for it. LOL There's nothing better than home-canned tuna. Yum!!

For your chili, it's best to make a huge pot up, scoop out enough for dinner, about an hour before the beans are done, and finish cooking it. Jar up the rest and process at 10 lb/90 min. No, the beans don't mush up, but it's important to jar it up before the beans are ready to eat.

As far as headspace on the ready-to-eat soups and stews, I fill them just to the jar-lifting band. I guess that's close to 1" head space.

Jasmin, I don't even use a "recipe". LOL I've been making it from scratch my whole life and do it strictly from memory and taste. I'm sure you can find a good basic recipe online somewhere. Just remember that if you're going to process it in jars, you want to put it in the jars when the beans are still firm (not rock hard, but still really firm). That way, when the processing time is up, you're not left with mushy "refried" chili beans.

I picked the last of the good apples on my property. The deer and the cows can have the rest I made another batch of applesauce.

Jaxson-I tried with Lowe's. No store within our range had any jars left

beachmel-Yum..what did you do with all your cranberries.

Fresh tuna is great. I once dated a man from LA. I was in NY. Anyway instead of flowers he sent me cans of tuna, lol. He went on a tuna fishing trip and had his tuna canned up.

Thanks for the tip about the chili. I will try it soon.
