great idea; use greenleaf or romaine instead of the nutritionally null iceberg lettuce, skip the tortilla or chips, use chicken instead of beef, lighten up the cheese and beans, skip the sour cream.

Love taco salad.

Usually, we add ground beef taco meat (or grilled or shredded chicken meat), lettuce, tomatoes, cheddar cheese, guacamole, salsa, tortilla chip strips, and some mild taco sauce.

Whole black beans, pinto beans or refried beans can be added also.

Great dish for summer dinner or lunch.

Sorry, but....if you take out all the things that make it a taco salad, all you have is a salad. I don’t think one a month, or so, is going to hurt anyone.

I chop up romaine lettuce, add red kidney beans, black olives, green olives, crushed tortilla chips (plain kind not Doritos) Shredded cheddar jack cheese, Guacamole on the side because I don't like it and my husband does. I make homemade ranch dressing to go on top and I mix it all together. We don't use salsa or chopped tomatoes because my husband can't have them.
I season the ground beef with taco seasoning and cook. I prefer small crumbles of meat not pureed.

Did it have Catalina salad dressing? This might be a version of it. (I remember The Broadway!)

Am I the only one who uses cabbage instead of lettuce with my tacos?

I like cabbage salsa, so I guess that counts as occasionally using cabbage with tacos. Mostly, I use lettuce.

A very minor point, but if you are not using any lettuce and are only building your dish on tortilla chips, that is not a taco salad, that is nachos.

Nope. Cabbage adds a nice texture and flavor.
