Well, they didn't have bark, so I got white chocolate chips. The first few rows I made seemed to be alright, but the dip was pretty creamy and not runny at all (no need to double dip these babies!). By the time I got to the last half of the balls, the dip seized up turned into the consistency of cold peanut butter. I ended up taking dollops of it and trying to press them around the balls. I was so aggravated by then that I really didn't mind that I couldn't finish the last few - I gave them to my son who was glad to get them! I will definitely have to look for bark for the next batch I make, because I don't want another 'tough-as-nails' white chocolate blob again.
They do taste great, and we ate the 'mistakes' last night and brought the pretty ones in for my office potluck.

The white chocolate chips harden up much quicker . The almond bark stays just the right consistency the whole time. You will find it - Super Walmart, Kroger, Food Lion or Farm Fresh (those are my local stores). Now we need to know if you are 'Oreo Ball Queen' at work,,,

We have none of those stores here in the LA area that I know of. We do have a few Walmarts, but I would rather have a root canal than go into one. I will call around and see if Michael's or some other specialty store carries it.
I have to resist the temptation to sneak any more balls - they are quite delish! I am looking forward to doing this again with the right consistency dip.

OK, made a batch for the first time. I used white bakers chocolate in the squares sold in the baking aisle right next to the regular bakers chocolate. Melted it in the microwave and carefully dipped the balls in only one side instead of trying to coat the whole thing, so they were coated on the tops only. Much easier then trying to dip the entrie ball and I used less white chocolate. They were a HUGE hit.

Do you have a kitchen supply store in your area or a bakery? If so go ask for melting/dipping chocolate it works very well. You can always reheat your chocolate when it starts to set up even if you are using chocolate chips. Is Michael's a craft supply store like we have here? If so they will have it too.

I have to let you all know that I've had a package of unopened oreos for over a week and a half. That feat has never been accomplished by me before, as they usually don't last more than a couple of days. I have everything needed to make this recipe, so maybe if I get snowed in today I'll try it!
Will let you know how they turn out.

I just finished making them and they taste great.
I couldn't find the bark or white bakers chocolate, so went with Nestles white chocolate chips. I added a tablespoon of vegetable oil to the chocolate and melted in a double boiler. The ones that I rolled didn't look that great- I wish I had found the bark. Finally, I just scooped up some melted white chocolate and drizzled it across the balls, the way you drizzle icing on a danish.
Making a pot of coffee right now to have another!

oreo balls
I made them this weekend, and all the people who I gave them to. loved them. I wasn't crazy about them and I love oreos.... I made them too big, I think, more like Walnut size, probably 2 bites, but they just didn't grab me. Now, 2 of my friends were fighting over them.... so it must be my taste buds.... I will try them again....

They are a bit sweet but I liked them. I think one bite is the perfect size for most candies you make for a holiday or goodie trays. Now if I could just get my helper kids to understand that we would be fine. They think bigger is better in anything chocolate.

I found big blocks of white and chocolate almond bark at Target yesterday, for $1.99 each - can't beat that with a stick! We'll be using some of it to make dipped pretzel sticks for the holidays.
