Default Gift Recipes Please

I am going to an extended family Christmas gathering and we've been requested to bring homemade gifts to exchange. I'm not very good at handicrafts so I thought I'd make some sort of "gifts in a jar" or something like that. Maybe some BBQ rubs or something a little different. Please share recipes, they don't have to be food either.

BBQ rub sounds good. You could make a Basket and include several things.

I like individual packets of cocoa and tea, aromatic oils--peppermint and rosemary are good and assorted little treats.

here is a good pork rub. I use it on ribs and boston butts for pulled pork.

1C. dark brwn sugar
1/2C. paprika
2 1/2 Tbs course blk pepper
1 1/2 tsp chili pwdr
1 1/2 Tbs garlic pwder and same w/onion pwdr
1 tsp cayenne
2 Tbs kosher salt

Mix very well, no clumps, when done add something xtra if needed. I like to use a bowl and mix w/hands. I usually add more garlic and heat, like ground mustard pwdr. Easier to do it steps, mix each ingredient in to make a nice consistancy.

Here is a basic marinade
1C veg oil
3/4 C soy sauce or dales steak marinade/seasoning found in wal-mart
1/2 C red wine
1/4 C worchest sauce
1/4 C mustard, don't use "basic", look on the shelf for something/heat
2T blk peper course
3 cloves garlic, smashed/crushed
2T. thyme
1T. rosemary

Marinade for 1-3 hrs, depending on meat/thickness. I usually do it for 1-2hrs on top sirloin.

I've got a pretty good smoked b.bean recipe if interested.

Btw.............go KSU Cats!!! KSU alum.

I just got a very nice cannister of mulling spices as a gift, and it's from williams-sonoma, so I'm sure it cost more than I'd spend on it! lol Anyway, my point is, the ingredients are: cinnamon stick pieces, whole allspice, whole cloves and orange peel. It would be simple and elegant to put that in a pretty jar with a ribbon and maybe a little card with instructions on what to do with it? According to my cannister you can make: mulled cider- simmer 2 T. of spice in 1 qt of apple cider for up to 20 min. add jigger of rum or brandy per cup as desired serve hot or cold, or mulled wine, simmer 1 liter of wine w/ 2 T. spice and 1/3-1/2 cup sugar for up to 20 min served hot or cold, or as was told to me, use as a potpourri, put spices in water and simmer on the stove to release the fragrance.

Just came across these recipes last week for homemade gifts:

Citrus Salt | WholeFoodsMarket.com
Herbes de Provence Salt | WholeFoodsMarket.com
Hot and Sweet Spice Rub | WholeFoodsMarket.com

Someone I work with forwarded the link to me - I didn't even realize Whole Foods had recipes on their website until I got these.

I have to share a recipe I just tried. It is absolutely delicious and would make a great Christmas food gift!

Praline Pecans or Walnuts
2 lb's Pecan or walnut halves
1 egg white
1 tsp water
1 C sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
3/4 tsp cocoa
1/4 tsp cayenne

Preheat oven to 325
Beat egg white with water. Stir in pecans and toss. Mix dry ingredients and pour over nuts and toss quickly. Pour nuts into a greased 9" x 14" baking pan. Bake 45 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Using spatula loosen nuts from the baking pan. Cool. Can be stored up to 2 weeks in an airtight container.

I'm going to put mine in some cute glass containers add a bow and give to our neighbors.
