Does any remember the Spanish Bar Cake the A&P grocery stores used to sell? I remember it largely from the 50's, but my mother says she could still buy it seasonly up until the 70's. It was a two-layer bar, very dark in color, as dark as a chocolate cake, but there was no taste of chocolate. It had spices and dark raisins in it and was iced with a white frosting that was not overly sweet. I have looked off and on over the years for it to no avail. Does anyone have the recipe? My mother and I were talking about it this afternoon. She will be 90 next month and I would love to surprise her with this.

That sounds like something I've never eaten but I've read about.

Jamaican (?) Black Cake.

Google black cake and you'll see what I mean. I read about it in a wonderful book of food essays by Laurie Colwin.

Italian panforte is similar to your description - Panforte is made with candied fruit and is often round with a white skin.

Pics here;

Panforte from Siena

or maybe Spanish fig cake? http://www.igourmet.com/reviews/pwr/...-Fig-Cake.html

I remember it, MICmom. I'd probably like it now, but didn't as a kid because it had (shudder) raisins! Wish I could help you.

Rolls start day sweetly; Spanish Bar Cake is A&P favorite

"Everyone who remembers the cake from the A&P thinks this is pretty close."

Google found lots of ideas...

Spanish bar cake is not like the Jamaican cake or like panforte either. I've had them all. Spanish bar cake was like a dark soft spice cake with raisins and had white frosting. Really good. The Jamaican cake is really dense, and panforte is totally dense. All good but unlike one another.

Oh wow! I do remember this.
Kind of like the date nut bread you can buy but with royal icing. My mom loved this!

Thanks for the memories!
