So an acquaintance of mine said that "Cooking is easy. Just follow the recipe". This was coming from a person who didn't cook at all

It's been irking me and I really wanted to slap the grin off his face (but I didn't because I'm above that).

I'll admit that I'm not the greatest cook due to the fact that I'm a college student (and honestly, when you are in a college, who can spare an hour anyways?). Plus, I do better at baking anyways just because I'm more focused on the recipe. However, I'm not the worst either. Saying things like "it's easy" or "follow the recipe" shows ignorance.

In my opinion, cooking is like any other tasks that requires hands. You have to practice, make blunders, and correct them. Just because there's instructions doesn't mean it's 100% foolproof. And if you miss even the minor detail, you can potentially botch up

Thoughts?

I think it depends on what level you're cooking at. Making a haute cuisine meal with 8 different courses from scratch for a dozen ppl without kitchen help is much different than warming up one of Trader Joe's prepackaged Indian thalis for yourself. Many recipes aren't that difficult after you make them a couple times. But to me a great home cook can conquer a new recipe and adjust on the fly for taste/temp/cooking duration. Moreover a great cook has to be able to juggle several recipes at at time and serve the dishes at the right temp without the benefit of heating lamps. It's really an awe-inspiring display of orchestrated chaos in the kitchen!

I envy those great cooks who are able to juggle recipes at a time, while serving dishes at the right temperature and flying it all solo

Unfortunately, I'm disorganized at the kitchen when it comes to cooking multiple things for many people. Which is why I now go out to eat instead

Five years ago I made a spanish omelet in a dorm lounge kitchenette just to prove to my roomie that I could cook. Alongside college I also worked 30 hours a week. I usually cooked for myself once or twice a week (weekends when not at work).

Now, it definitely depends on the major (for a semester I was an art major and barely had time to eat, much less cook. english kept me busy with reading but I found time), but for the majority of college students they "don't have time" because they're too busy eating out and partying. An hour is nothing, depending on what you're cooking (I read between stirrings or during baking time).

And yeah, you will make mistakes at first. Everyone is new at something some time in their life. First time I made muffins I mixed up teaspoon and tablespoon. I learned that saltlick muffins aren't tasty. For awhile anyone could tell how my cooking was going by the amount of cursing that came out of the kitchen. Its something you just get the hang of after awhile. I still can't serve an all-hot-and-ready-at-the-same-time 4 course meal but who does that anymore, really? Americans are fat enough. :P
