I've gathered canned beans for a last-minute ( !!)potluck salad:
black, garbanzo, dark kidney, white kidney, yellow wax & green beans.
I will add chopped red onion & chopped peppers.
I have olive oil & vinegar.

Do I have to use sugar? Or will it be fine without it. All the recipes I see insist upon sugar.

Thanks in advance for the advise.

taste first & add later. If you use cider vinegar or balsamic vinegar you probably won't have to add sugar.

Thanks! I usually only have honey, blackstrap molasses, maple syrup & rice syrup in the house. I doubt any of those would work!

I always add sugar and a few drops of tabasco
it give it a sweet taste followed by an explosion of flavor

Maybe do a sample run and try Stevia instead?

You must sweeten it, but I have used splenda or equal in my 3 bean before.

I tend to be allergic to splenda and other artificial sweeteners. I think honey would be good but very little of it. I think it would be great with the stevia that is available now in stores like wal-mart.

Agave syrup (natural sugar from agave plant) could be used. I found it at Walmart cheaper than the grocery store. They have dark and light versions. I tried the darker version and it tastes just like sugar.

Well, everyone! Thanks for the input. I broke down & bought white sugar, something I never have in the house. I wasn't sure how my honey would mix.... sticky beans perhaps!! Won't make it until tomorrow, since the potluck is Thursday at work.
