Default Homemade Barbeque Sauce

Now that grilling season has arrived, it would be fun to try and make some homemade barbeque sauce. I would love to see any recipes you might have .

This one isn't tried and true, but sounds very interesting. If you can't find Mug brand, try another good one.

MUG Barbecue Sauce

1 cup MUG¨Root Beer
1 cup ketchup
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup orange juice
3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons (packed) dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon mild-flavored (light) molasses
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
1/2 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions:
Combine all ingredients in heavy medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until reduced to 1 1/2 cups, about 20 minutes. Season sauce to taste with salt and pepper. Cool slightly. Transfer to bowl. Cover and refrigerate. (Can be made 2 weeks ahead; keep refrigerated)

No-cook Low Carb Bourbon Barbecue
Recipe By : Adapted from George Stella
Serving Size : 32
29 ounces tomato puree
6 ounces tomato paste
2 ounces bourbon -- and some for the cook!
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons Liquid Smoke
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tablespoon Tabasco sauce
1/4 cup bulk Splenda
2 tablespoons red onion -- finely chopped
1 small clove garlic -- minced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon kosher salt -- can use regular salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon onion powder

Combine sauce ingredients in a bowl and whisk well to combine. Keep refrigerated.

(Notes - Original recipe was way too sweet for me - was 3/4 Splenda and 1/4 Brown Splenda, changed Splenda to 1/4 and eliminated brown Splenda completely.)

I'm not giving up any of my secrets, but I will pass on some tips

You can use lots of types of sodas as a base, similar to the 1st poster's. My fav sauce has Dr Pepper, Big Red is also good.

You can use big hunks of onion, lemon, garlic or other items for simmering, just strain when ready.

Butter can add a lot of flavor to sauces.

Try lots of different vinegars, liquid smokes and sweeteners, they all make slightly different sauces. Experement!

Make plenty and freeze some for another day.

Pick up and use a plastic squeeze "ketchup/mustard" bottle at the dollar store, it's the best way to serve a thin sauce. You can snip off the end if you need a wider hole.

If you are watching sodium, no/low salt ketchups or tomato sauces can help a lot.

That low carb bourbon bbq sauce sounds delicious. It just so happens that I am watching carbs right now, so that will be a nice recipe for me to have on hand.

Thanks for the tips, Herbrocks!

Make sure you read the labels on the tomato paste and tomato puree that you use - some brands are loaded with added sugar.

These look like good recipes, Gandalara and Tnhoneypot. And those look like great tips, Herbrocks. thank you all for sharing.....

Jack Daniels bbq sauce is pretty expensive........I wonder if your recipe is about the same as the store bought, Gandalara.......

I have a recipe for coca cola beef....my friend from El Salvador gave it to me years ago....you make it in a skillet with cheap cuts of beef and add vegetables, too......and boy, is the meat tender when done.......I think the acid in soda pop tenderizes things.....

Default another good one ~Tried and True~

This recipe is from a restaurant around here that has been featured in magazines, The Today Show, and has been visited by alot of celebrities. Its fantastic and makes alot, so you can either put into sealed pint canning jars, or we have even frozen it before into plastic containers. You serve this sauce with shredded or pulled smoked meat, and you will get ooohs and ahhhs! Really good! If you wanna make some great barbecue beans, cook some Great Northern white beans with the sauce and add some of the shredded pork to it too.

Ridgewood Sauce

4 cups {32 ozs} catsup
1/3 bottle Tabasco sauce
1/3 cup vinegar
3 1/2 ozs. sugar
1 1/2 tsps. garlic salt
1/4 cup molasses
2/3 oz Kitchen Bouquet or (hickory smoke)... we used 1/2 of each
1/3 cup Worchestershire sauce
2/3 oz. yellow mustard
5 1/2 oz oil
1 1/2 tsps. onion salt
1 1/2 tsps. Accent
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper

instructions-boil all ingredients together. Serve over smoked beef brisket or pulled pork. May be canned or frozen.

Sure, made this one last night and it is great on boneless chicken thighs.

1 cup coffee liquor
1/2 cup worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 small bottle pick-a-pepper sauce
1 small bottle tiger sauce

Mix all together and marinate chicken over night in half the sauce. Grill meat on pit and baste with remaining sauce.
