We didn't have counseling. I believe that if we did, we would not have gotten married, and things would have been better for everyone involved.

Good for you...you guys have it made. That's good to hear.

It sounds as if you knew each other very well, not to mention, you do not seem like a drama queen. You're probably a very easy wife to get along with.

I am just curious to know. Also do you think it would have been a good idea to get the counseling?

Would you recommend it to soon to be married couples, even if you did not get it yourself?

Discuss and ad whatever you like to the topic.

If you'd like, tell us how long you've been married.

Ron
(Be nice)
Yup, by a minister.
20 years.
Yes I would recommend, but more extensively with a trained therapist!

First time: yes. Ended up divorced.

Second time: no. Still married.

YMMV.

No, but we went through the book "100 Questions to Ask Before You marry" which was really fun and enlightening.

I also talked privately to a rabbi about a week after our engagement. I was having panic attacks about my decision. The talk was a tremendous help to me (even though I am an atheist).

We went through a "required" 6 visit counseling session. I think it was a racket that the minister and his PHD buddy had going.. I don't recall that is helped greatly, but I guess it didn't hurt, as we're still married. 29 yrs.

We didnt get any counseling prior to getting married. Compared to some on here, we are short timers...lol
In November it will be 8yrs that we have been married.

As to whether or not I would recommend counseling to others I think would really depend on their current situation. If a couple has been together for a significant period of time prior to deciding to get married, then they may have had the time to learn some of the quirks about the other that they may find annoying or irritating. In my opinion knowing things like this would give a counselor a base to go on, to help them work thru things that may cause problems in their relationship.

On the other hand, if the couple have been together a relatively short period of time, they very well may still be in the honeymoon stage. To them, they more then likely will think that they have no issues to discuss, and will be less willing to listen about potential problems.
